Inflatable tents became popular some years ago now when Heimplanet first introduced The Cave (picture below). With its striking design and rigidity, The Cave opened the way to many other manufacturers to look into the air tent technology. This doesn't mean The Cave is the best inflatable tent but it certainly was a trigger for other companies to develop their own. There are now many manufacturers providing great air tents at various prices and sizes. This includes Vango, Berghaus, Decathlon's own Quechua, Outwell, Coleman etc...

inflatable tents

Why inflatable tents?

Inflatable tents are a very interesting alternative to traditional tents. They are VERY practical! Even the bigger inflatable family tents can usually be erected by only one person in a very short time.  And that's the main reason why they are increasingly popular. You can't be in a campsite these days without being surrounded by inflatable tents. Over the last few years, the technology has evolved a lot. They are sturdier than ever and come in a large selection of sizes and shapes with various features. You should be able to find a suitable inflatable tent for your family size and your budget quite easily considering the quantity of options available. Their main drawbacks are usually their price and weight. But if you're after a good quality tent and are planning to stay in one sport, they are worth it.

Which family inflatable tent to go for?

This will mainly depend on the size your require and the budget you have. Decathlon have recently broaden their inflatable tent range and are now selling 3 man inflatable tents starting from less £139.99. A 3 man tent is obviously not suitable for average families but it shows the price range starts really low. For a 4 man tent, Decathlon have an option starting at £159.99. Their best seller... You wonder why! Absolute bargain for an inflatable of that size and quality. They are amazing inflatable tents in that price bracket.

If you are a more serious camper and you're after a company you know and trust, Vango or Berghaus are always a good option. They have been experts in their fields for decades and build reliable large family tents with vast amounts of internal space. The Vango AirBeam range has won many awards over the years! Camping Magazine chose the Inspire 600 as it is a fantastic tent for those who require a great internal living area combined with a spacious covered external space. In reality, the design and built quality apply to the whole range of Vango Airbeam Tents. The Vango Airbeam tents have been our best sellers year on year.

Inflatable tent
Vango Airbeam

When you visit family campsites nowadays, there are mainly 3 brands of inflatable tents that are always present on site. Vango, Coleman and Berghaus. They are not the cheapest but judging by their popularity, they certainly have their appeal.

There are also other inflatable tents available to consider, like the ever growing Quechua Air Seconds range (Decathlon), Neumayer or Easycamp inflatable tents.

Are inflatable tents wind resistant?

The best inflatable tents on the market go through rigorous tests as you can see in the video below.

Vango pushed their testings to the extreme by sending one of their inflatable tent into space!

Some of the best inflatable family tents for camping in more details

Vango inflatable tents

Vango inflatable family tent

Back in 2011, Vango launched their AirBeam range of inflatable tents and many campers didn't believe it would catch on. Many thought it was just a passing trend. Sure at first campers were apprehensive of this new technology. What if it deflates during the night? Will it puncture easily? What will happen on windy days? Lots of questions were raised about the quality, durability and sturdiness of these inflatable tents. But apart from the "puncture" aspect, all these questions are also valid for traditional tents...

Nowadays, it's harder and harder to find tents on campsites that are still using "traditional" poles. Indeed most tents are now inflatable tents. They are basically becoming the new traditional tents. It is very understandable to see the appeal of these tents considering how convenient they are. Most of them can be erected by only one person in a very short amount of time, even for larger family tents. Vango were amongst the pioneers working on this technology and they are now one the main brand manufacturing (and still developing) some of the best inflatable tent on the market.

Coleman FastPitch Air Valdes Inflatable Tent

Coleman Valdes FastPitch air tent

Contrary to Vango, Coleman were not by any means pioneers in developing inflatable tents! In fact, the Valdes FastPitch range is their first ever! But what a inflatable tent it is! As most air tents on the market, it is very easy to pitch, only taking a few minutes. Where Coleman hit their competition hard, is on the quality of the bedrooms. Indeed they come with a very handy blackout technology blocking up to 99% of daylight from the bedrooms. Ideal for parents or anyone who is sensitive to daylight. To add to this, they created very large bedrooms that is really appreciated by families and provides more comfort. Oh, and it comes with a hinged door! All in all, it is a very thought through and put together family tent. Maybe their first, but a massive success!

The Coleman FastPitch Air Valdes inflatable tent comes in 4 different sizes: the Valdes 4 (sleeps 4), the Valdes 6 (sleeps 6), the Valdes 6L (sleeps 6 with bigger living space), the Valdes 6XL (even bigger living space).

Berghaus inflatable tents

Berghaus inflatable tent

The Berghaus range of inflatable family tents goes from a 4 person tent all the way through to a much larger 8 person tent with lots of living space, the Air 8. These Berghaus tents get an amazing amount of great reviews on camping forums. Some reviews claiming they put their Air tent up on their own in less than 2min 30s! It deflates even quicker at the touch of a button. It comes with a double efficiency pump making inflation easy, and the pre-attached bedroom making pitching time even quicker.

The Berghaus Air tents use high-quality TPU beams offering superb strength. The whole range comes with a fully seam taped flysheet and groundsheet increase durability and keep out water. The high-performance tent features extra-large windows with curtains to shut out light, and mesh doors on the inner bedroom for extra privacy. It has rainhood above side door and boasts excellent head room!

Inflatable tents 2018

With 2018 spring on our door step, many of us will want to leave that state of hibernation we often get over winter. Nothing better to enjoy spring the outdoors than going camping either for family break over Easter Weekend or to go to the first music festival of the year. During the winter however, the major outdoor brands didn’t rest on their laurels and have been working hard on their new range of inflatable tents 2018. Inflatable.org.uk has put together a list of the new range of inflatable tents available this year. You can see that list below. Obviously, as these are from the 2018 range so they have little reviews so far.

Best 5 man inflatable tent 2018

The Vango Odyssey Air Beam 500 is by far our best 5 man inflatable tent this year! No real surprise here! Vango have been designing amazing tents and other camping gear for years now and their reputation has always preceded them. See below a picture of the tent in question.

Best 5 man inflatable tent 2017
Vango Odyssey Air Beam 5 man inflatable tent

One of the main reasons the Odyssey Air Beam 500 is selling so well is the time it takes to erect. And the ease to set it up. For such a big tent, it is only a matter of minutes… This is always appreciated especially with our delicate British weather.

It took me less than 15 mins to erect for the first attempt, I think 8 mins is doable including the pitching time.

Once erected, most people will be able to stand in the tent with its height of 195cm in the living area and 185cm in the bedrooms. It is very sizeable too with 7.85m2 of living space. You can see the details in the blue print below.

The Air Beam technlogy

The Vango AirBeam technology is pre-built into all Vango inflatable tents range. Meaning, you don’t need to worry about heavy poles. Once you reach the camp-site all you have to do is simply inflate your tent using the double-action pump provided, then you can get on with more important things such as spending time with your friends and family in the outdoors.

Best 5 man inflatable tent 2018

Vango have been working hard to design and develop this best selling 5 man inflatable tent. Not only have they built a quality product, they have designed it so you feel at home in the outdoors. To do so, they have considered full stand-up head height, full mesh doors, lantern hoops and storage pockets. It also has large windows for you to enjoy the outside from the comfort of your tent.

And when night come, the Airzone technology integrated in all the Airbeam range regulates heat easily. The toggled room dividers and light out inners used in the bedrooms means you won’t be awakened by the morning light.

Kelty Mach 4

Kelty-Mach-4-AirPitch-Tent-with-Footprint-Bundle-One-Size-Grey-0-4

The Kelty Mach 4 Air-Pitch Inflatable Tent is an interesting inflatable tent that works surprisingly well. Compared to traditional pole tents, having fewer pieces to lose or break makes sense. However don’t expect to save on weight or bulk for this one – the Kelty Mach 4 (and most inflatable tents for that matter) are aimed at the car camper crowd. It offers plenty of room for four with a large vestibule for additional cover and storage. Weighing just over 9kg in total, the Kelty Mach 4 offers 4.67 m2 of floor area plus and 4.69 m2 in the vestibule.Kelty-Mach-4-AirPitch-Tent-with-Footprint-Bundle-One-Size-Grey-0-2

Aimed at three-season campers, the Mach 4 is a great inflatable tent that performs well. It inflates really quickly, with Kelty stating an amazing 1 minute setup time.. The tent has 2 separate inlets. Make sure to inflate both fully, for a sound and solid structure. Deflation is really easy too. Taking the tent down is easy and fast. Please note the Mach4 must be staked down before inflation.

Kelty Mach 4 man inflatable tent being inflatedFor bad weather conditions, Kelty helpfully included a UV-resistant rainfly with nicely taped seams. It’s well integrated, so you don’t need to carry a separate piece! The Mach 4 also has extra premium features, like the noiseless zippers. These should be fitted on every tents! Perfect for an impromptu nature call in the middle of the night! Internal storage pockets keep items out of the way, and there is sufficient amount of ventilation. It is recommended to get the optional footprint for the vestibule if you want to use it as a living space, not so important for bike storage for instance.

Comfortable for four, the Mach 4 has a roomy interior and is very simple to setup. For even more room, the Kelty Mach 4 is available in a six-person model as well (Kelty Mach 6).

The Kelty Mach 4 is fairly expensive but we’ve also found their pricing reasonable compared to similar products, like the Gelert Omega 4 for instance.

We love Kelty’s tents, like the inexpensive and lovely Salida and the Hula House 6 from a few years ago, which offers plenty of space.

Inflatable tents vs normal tents

One of the recurring questions we frequently get is what are the benefits of inflatable tents vs normal tents?

Being the new big thing this year in the camping world, more and more people are interested in inflatable tents and therefore ask lots of questions to compare usual pole tents and the new (and yes a bit more expensive) inflatable tents.

Typical questions we receive to compare both type of tents are often like

Are they worth the extra money for the convenience, are they stable, what happens if one bursts, gets a puncture, are they prone to leaks? Anything else I need to know???

Fast and easy to erect

First thing to know; inflatable tents are a lot quicker and easier to erect than conventional tents.
They can be built up by only one person, no matter how big the tent is. So if you’re looking for family tent, they are quite handy as one parent can look after the kids whilst the other one set the tent up. Check our best inflatable tent for families 2014.
Have a look at this video on YouTube showing how easy it is to setup inflatable tents like the Kelty Mach 6 AirPitch showcased in the video.

Sturdy and stable

Inflatable tents are VERY stable compared to normal tents. They usually come with inner tension beam that makes them sturdier than most tents. One inflatable tent user said:

We have one. It’s great. Very easy to put up, very strong in windy conditions. The fabric tends to be thicker as they’re a premium product.

What if they burst?

This one is probably the most common question we get asked when people start comparing inflatable tents vs normal tents. And it’s a fair one.
Most inflatable tents have a system so you can’t over pump them. They come with recommended pressure which is usually between 10-12 psi and most of them go through a lot more through testing, 20psi, sometimes even 25psi. So bursting shouldn’t really happen.
It’s not saying it can never happen, the same way a carbon fibre pole can sometimes break.
In the unlikely event that a air pole would burst, you will be able to return it and have it fixed. And it is a small puncture, which again are rare, most inflatable tents come with puncture repair kit.

Sooooo…

Inflatable tents vs normal tents?

The answer is quite simple, everybody seem to agree that if you can afford one, inflatable tents are much better than normal pole tents.

Inflatable tents

As most campers know, finding your pitch then sitting back with a cold beer is one of life’s great pleasures… If only we didn’t have to struggle with setting the tent up beforehand!.

It’s always a pain putting up the poles and fitting the flimsy pegs… Put it this way, putting up a tent can sometimes be a challenge, especially when it rains, you’re tired, and all you want is to shelter in your tent and get a nice warm cuppa (as opposed to the child beer when it’s warm outside).

But thanks to new research, technologies and clever people, we don’t have to go through that hassle anymore.

Inflatable tents

Inflatable tents

Inflatable tents use air-filled tubes to replace the usual pole frame. You just have to put the pump into the valve and pump the tent up! That’s it, that easy! Most inflatable tents are quick to setup, inflating the main structure in around 60 seconds from just one valve. And for the campers with childhood memories of punctured inflatable bouncy castles, most inflatable tents come with isolation valves ensuring it remains fully inflated even in the event of damage.

The tents come as one single unit (ground sheet, fly, and outer fabric) and because there are no solid poles, these tents are surprisingly lightweight and easy to pack away.

So whether you’re a experience camper or just a festival goer looking for an alternative to the pop-up, check out our selection of the best inflatable tents available on the internet.

Amazon and other partners have a large selection of inflatable tents available now, visit their list of products here.
